Review: Diamond by JA Low (Spoiler-free)

Hello! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have my review for Diamond by JA Low. I received this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

This will be spoiler-free (mostly) even if you haven’t read the first book, Sapphire. You can click on the title to go see my review.

The reason I say this will be mostly spoiler-free is because I will kind of be spoiling the ending of Sapphire. Technically I won’t go into details, but it will kind of be a bit of a general spoiler.

Let’s do this!

First, stats.

Form: eBook (I got this from NetGalley but, from what I know, in the US, it’s only available in eBook form)
Publisher: Hachette Australia
Pub Date: October 29, 2017
Age Range: Adult
Genre: Romance, Mystery, Thriller
Series: Bratva Jewels (Book 2)

Trigger Warnings: Drug Abuse, Rape, Sexual Assault, Depression, Suicide (I can’t vouch for how any of these things are handled because I haven’t personally dealt with any of these things in the way it was dealt with in the book)

Now, onto my breakdown.

I got this rating breakdown from Kim from Kim Here. You can go check out her video here.

Let’s start by talking about the writing

Writing: 3/4

I was addicted to JA Low’s writing from the first time I read Sapphire. I had a bit of an issue getting into this book, but I know that’s because of when I read it. I wasn’t in the right mindset to be reading this type of book. The moment that I picked it back up at 15%, I was drawn in once again.

I had an unproofread copy of this that I got from NetGalley.   So I didn’t take any points off because of mistakes that could have been fixed in the proofread. But I did take a point off because there was something off about the writing. I absolutely adore JA Low’s storytelling but there was just something that was causing me to give it 3 points instead of 4.

Characters: 3/4

I loved each and every character in this book. Well, the ones that you were supposed to. They had so much depth to each of them and they were just wonderful. I couldn’t get enough of the interactions between the characters. I loved slowly learning their back stories and trying to guess what’s going on with them.

I did take a point off, though, because they all seemed too “perfect.” Not in the sense that they didn’t have any flaws, but more in the sense that they were all skinny, muscular, beautiful, etc. It would have been nice to have a little bit of a change. It fit for the story, but it still would have been nice.

Story: 3/4

I absolutely adored this story. It kept me on the edge of my seat and excited the whole time. I couldn’t get enough of the action and romance. It was a perfect balance for me. This book picks up where the last one left off, but it follows Sapphire/Zoe’s sister, Diamond/Grace. She ends up being kidnapped once again, but a gorgeous assassin for Bratva. But Grace ends up questioning everything when he stays with her through her entire detox.

There were some things that felt a bit forced or didn’t make entirely perfect sense, but it worked for this story. It was a wonderful guilty pleasure read for me, but I took off a point just because of how forced and a bit over dramatic it seemed.

Pacing: 4/4

The pacing was just perfect for me. Every time you thought you were going to lose interest, it brought you right back into the story. I didn’t want to put this book down. I read 85% of it in a single day, which almost never happens for me. I’m sure that if I would have started from page one when I picked this book back up, I would have read the entire thing in a day. And the ending was a wonderful cliffhanger.

I personally probably would have ended it just a bit earlier and put the epilogue after a certain point, but either way, the ending left me needing more.

Personal Thoughts: 4/4

I absolutely adored this book. It was so addicting. I couldn’t get enough of it. Even the issues the I had, weren’t issues for me. I seem to have a bit of a problem with most adult books that I read, but JA Low just knows how to write it in a way that I adore.

Overall: 17/20 Points
Stars: 4.5/5

Let me know if you’ve read this book or if I’ve convinced you to in the comments. These books might not be for everyone, but they are such guilty pleasures for me.

Now I’m working on reading the first book in JA Low’s Dirty Texas series. I’m only a 9% in and I’m already addicted.

I’m always willing to read and review books. Or if you would like me to watch and review a show, movie, anime, or Korean drama. Contact me on my email if you would like me to review anything specific.
