Shadow and Bone Spoiler-Free and Spoiler Review

Banner 1

I wanted to like this book so bad. I really did. I keep saying that. I tried to enjoy it. I just couldn’t. There were things that weren’t going the way I wanted and the story just overall bothered me. I’ll get more into that the more in depth I get with this.

Let’s start by discussing the writing since that’s easy. This book was such an easy read for me. I would have had it done quicker that I did but I ended up having to do homework. You could tell that Leigh Bardugo was still early in her writing when this came out. It’s not the best thing I’ve ever read but not the worst. Overall, I’d give the writing 3.5/5 stars.

Now onto the characters. There were several side characters in this that I wish we would have gotten to know slightly better. There’s a spoiler thought I have about Genya. Well, I have spoiler thoughts on all of the characters but there’s one single thing that I hated about this that I hope is fixed later on. The depth was just lacking for some characters. A lot of the side characters were just that. Sides. Like they were thrown in without a backstory. I enjoy when authors plan out every character’s life. But that’s just me.

Onto plot. In case you don’t know, this book is about a girl named Alina who suddenly finds out that she is the one and only person who can help the Darkling save the world. So, generic dystopian storyline. There’s a couple plot twists that I saw coming but were still fairly enjoyable and angering all in one go. The plot was just average to me. It didn’t really surprise me in any way. The world is well thought out on Leigh’s part and that’s awesome.

There was no reason for me to not like this book. I just didn’t. It fell flat for me and was just really dry to me. The ending picked up pace and that was awesome. Until the very ending. Then it fell off again. I hope that the next books are like the ending but not the very ending, if that makes any sense.

I gave this book a 3/5 star rating. I may bump it up to 3.5/5 but I doubt it. I would still recommend for people to read this book, though. I can definitely see why people enjoy it.

Spoilers Ahead! If you haven’t read this book yet, don’t read past this point.

Alrighty. Let’s start this out strong. What the crap is going on with Genya. She knows that Alina ran away but that’s all we got with her. We don’t know who’s side she’s on or what! I really hope this is clarified in the next book.

The fact that Alina kept pointing out that she didn’t know if the Darkling was dead or not was a dead giveaway that he’ll be in later books. And I haven’t even looked at synopsis of those! Speaking of the Darkling, that’s my other spoilery thought.

I’m so freaking mad about the who Darkling situation. I couldn’t care less about the romance with Mal. I like myself the bad boy of the group. Alina fell for him WAY too quickly, even for her. I don’t mind insta-love most of the time but come on. They barely saw each other and all of a sudden she loves him? Even I find that to be a stretch.

And of course, at the end when he lets her go see Mal in the prison, I was getting all the feels. Then I felt horrible for them because he’s crazy! Us loving him in the beginning was intentional. Great job there. But I feel like we should have just suddenly hated him. Which I mean, that could have been the case when we found out he was going to use Alina for his own personal agenda but I just didn’t feel it. I felt like maybe there was a good reason for all of this. Up until the end. Even now, I still hope that there’s something behind all of this so he isn’t completely the bad guy. Does that make me the bad guy?

I just couldn’t seem to like this book as much as I wanted to. It was good. I just don’t think I enjoyed it as much as everyone else.

Spoiler over. Read below for social media.
